Smart Fats To Out Smart Aging 2017
The time of low fat diets is over. Evidence strongly suggests that you should be eating good fats for the health of your brain and especially if you want to lose weight. The cholesterol myth along with this, has also been debunked so what are these sexy, delicious smart fats that you need to be eating and why are they good for you?
Clinical trials have recently shown that the right smart fats actually reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease. Recognising it is actually sugar, not fat that is responsible for most degenerative diseases.
Certain foods containing omega 3’s and 7’s can have massive roles to play when eaten as part of your health plan such as avocado, macadamia nuts, pomegranate oil, for curbing hunger and stress and supporting reproductive hormones.
People are now changing their habits and for good reason. For example, eating fat with your vitamins means they actually boost nutrient absorption. Single fats boost the nutrient absorption of Vitamins A, E, D, and K as well as the essential fatty acids that we can’t live without.
Interestingly smart fats have been shown to reduce inflammation in a whole list of diseases such as psoriasis, eczema, arthritis and depression. They have also been shown to stabilise blood sugars.
So let’s take look at these smart fats more closely.
There are several different types of omega-6 fatty acids. Most come from vegetable oils in the form of linoleic acid (LA). The body converts linoleic acid to GLA (Gamma Linoleic) and then to Arachidonic Acid (AA). You can get GLA from several plant-based oils, including Evening Primrose oil (EPO), Borage oil, and Black Currant Seed oil. Most of these oils also contain some linoleic acid.
Your Omega 3’s come from fish and krill oil (EPA and DHA) and plant sources such as Flax seeds, Chia and Hemp and are high in ALA and are important sources of nutrients as we all need Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA).
However many people are moving away from fish as a source of Omega 3’s because of the contamination factors from mercury, PCB’s and radioactive substances such as strontium. Anyone with heavy metal toxicity should really avoid large amounts of predator fish in their diets for this reason.
Omega 3’s in the form of Flax and Chia seeds are great hormone regulators. Just two tablespoons a day can significantly reduce breast cancer tumours as they reduce estrogen levels.
Let’s look at how we can use some of these individual oils to support us.
From Evening Primrose Oil, Borage Oil, and Black Current Seed Oil can help retrain your metabolism. These are amazing smart fats, not only do they trigger fat burning but brown fat burning, which speeds up your metabolism for weight loss and your supports sodium pump (essential for kidneys, blood pressure and cardiac contractions). When you balance these specific GLA’s with Omega 3’s you can enjoy healthy taught skin, this is great for PMS and perimenopause and helps to remove that morning stiffness.

Many people are aware that some GLA’s can be inflammatory, however a good tip to be aware of is Black Currant Seed Oil which also has some Omega 3’s in it. This neutralises the arachidonic pathway, which is why it definitely an oil of choice. It is one of the most potent natural anti-inflammatories and it is also great for your GI tract. Black Current Seed oil has been shown to alleviate Arthritis, swelling & inflammation. It can also be helpful for injuries, menstrual cramps and has the added benefit of increasing your T-helper cells for immune building.
CLA’s Conjugated Linoleic Acid
These are predominantly found in grass fed meat (especially beef) and dairy products. Anyone interested in weight loss CLA’s are your best friend. Numerous studies have shown that that is has profound calorie burning capabilities for fat loss especially around the tummy areas. It also supports lean muscle mass and the growth of cell membranes.
Let’s look at Coconut oil:
Coconut oil can do no wrong, it is full of MCT’s (medium chain triglycerides). You can obtain products just called MCT oil and this is also excellent – usually taken from coconuts and refined further. Coconut is excellent for cognitive function especially for those with Alzheimers and other neurodegenerative diseases. It is wonderful to cook with, and especially useful for producing keytones for break down fat. Coconut oil is the only oil to completely bypass the gall bladder, so it is great for those who have had their gall bladder’s removed.

Omega 7’s can even promote collagen production which is new. Plus they have been shown to hugely support the immune system.
Some people cannot regulate fats, usually because their Gall Bladder is not working, so what are the symptoms of poor fat metabolism: Dry skin, a bitter taste in the mouth, feeling nauseousness, pale stools, occasional dizziness, burping and an inability to detox generally. Therefore when you are eating large amounts of smart fats it is really important to support the Gall Bladder, with perhaps one of the following: ox bile salts, choline or taurine.
A Few Storage Tips
Most oils go rancid when in the presence of light and air. A good oil will generally be sold to you in a black or navy bottle to preserve it’s qualities. If you use seed oils especially chia or flax, grind them yourself to prevent oxidisation and going rancid. Many oils do better when they are kept in a fridge.
